Vineyard Safe: the review of Giacomo Anselmi, Cantine Balita in Bali

Who is Giacomo Anselmi?

Giacomo runs a winery in Bali, dealing with both the vines and the winery. He discovered Safe vineyard through Instagram and uses it in an agronomic context very different from the European one.

Climate context and issues

  • Tropical climate: absence of winter and constant vigor; Plants do not go into dormancy.
  • Two annual productions: the overall yield varies between 80 and 150 q/year.
  • Persistent phytopathies and phytophages: peronospora, oidium, botrite, black rot; insects such as cochineals, cicadas, thrips, etc.
  • Continuous humidity: promotes the development and persistence of fungal diseases, reducing the effectiveness time of treatments.

Why Vigneto Sicuro helps here

  • Targeted alerts for the occurrence of fungal diseases, which are key in a climate with constant risk.
  • It makes it possible to adapt the intervention time to the local situation, where the declared coverage of a plant protection product can be quickly reduced by rain or high humidity.
  • It supports more precise decisions on when to treat, taking into account local vigour, variety and climatic conditions.

Conclusion

For realities with more annual harvests and humid climates such as Bali, tools that promptly report the phytosanitary risk are very valuable. Vigneto Sicuro helps to calibrate interventions and not to rely on standard timings that, in a tropical context, often do not correspond to the reality on the field.

Full Testimony

My name is Giacomo Anselmi and I follow a winery in Bali, Indonesia. I take care of both the vineyard and the cellar, so I follow everything from the grapes to the bottle. I met Vigneto Sicuro, if I remember correctly, through Instagram.

There is no winter here: the plants never go to sleep, so the apical dominance is very accentuated. The main problems are fungal diseases – downy mildew, oidium, botrytis, black rot – and insects (cochineals, cicadas, thrips, etc.). Local conditions, with ever-present humidity, keep these pests and pathogens practically always active.

We have two productions per year: If one goes wrong, hopefully the second. Typically we collect between 80 and 150 quintals in total in the two harvests.

Vigneto Sicuro helps us a lot because it alerts us to the onset of fungal diseases just when the signals are needed, in a context where humidity is constant. The effectiveness time of active ingredients cannot be standard: It depends on the vigour of the plants, the variety and above all on the local weather conditions. For example, if I do a treatment and after three days it rains, even if the product claims a one-week coverage, in practice that effectiveness time is drastically reduced.

FAQ

Of course. Safe Vineyard is a decision support system. It doesn't replace your experience, but it can support you in difficult decisions which you have to take in the vineyard.

We have access to one large network of agro-meteo sensors throughout the national territory and we have developed a mathematical method that allows us to be able to understand what are the microclimatic conditions in different points of the territory

We give you access to very punctual microclimate data which are characteristic of your plot. Instead of buying a weather station for each of your plots thanks to Vigneto Sicuro you will have the same information as a weather station without needing to buy it. A nice saving!

We always provide microclimatic data related to your plot so that you can use them in the most constructive way.

Our information is much more timely and can help your agronomist advise you better on when to actually carry out treatments in the vineyard
