Vineyard Safe: the review of Roberto Grassa, Terre di Ranchibile in Sicilia

A first vineyard in April 2024

Roberto bought his first vineyard in April 2024, starting the practical experience that year. Coming already from the agricultural world, he had listened for years to the daily problems of winemakers and knew that sooner or later he would face them too.

Discovered thanks to a webinar on social media

During an evening navigation on smartphones, probably on Facebook, an advertisement appeared announcing a webinar on viticultural issues. He joined immediately ‘in a closed box’, already feeling that there was something positive about the initiative.

From calendar to alert: a strategic choice

They did not follow the classic calendar of treatments, but the indications provided by the alerts of Safe vineyard. The difference is clear: intervene only when necessary, avoiding unnecessary treatments that are otherwise done regardless of the risk.

Direct and indirect economic savings

Treatment only if necessary has generated a significant economic return:

  • savings on plant protection products purchased
  • labor savings (in its case, it reduces costs with contractors in key months)

A perceived competitive advantage

Other farmers, lacking the same tool, consulted him to find out if it was appropriate to deal with it. He defines Vigneto Sicuro almost as a "crystal ball" that let him know before the others when to intervene.

The value for organic

Being an organic farm, fewer plant protection products introduced also mean concrete respect for the soil and the atmosphere: an extra step in environmental protection. Definitely recommend the service.

Full Testimony

I remember that I was practically watching, I do not remember if it was Facebook or something similar, however it was a social, and during one of the usual navigations with the smartphone made in the evening came out your advertising. It was said that soon you could participate in an intervention on the problems related to the vineyards and I immediately took the plunge: I joined the initiative and participated in your webinar. This is how everything was born: I met you this way.

That year I contacted you was my first experience, because I bought the vineyard in April 2024. However, being part of the world of agriculture, I heard all the farmers who bred the vineyard talk about the problems they experienced every day. A fury to hear them speak, and finding myself already with the vineyard "in the belly", I thought: Sooner or later it will happen to me too. So I said, it is good to immediately make a culture, and that new valid tools come to better manage the vineyard.

I joined immediately in a closed box, but I already felt that there was something positive about your initiative. The results were obvious. We did not work preventively following a schedule with my collaborator: We worked according to the instructions given to us by your alerts. This was an important thing, because doing calendar activities regardless of whether there is a risk or not means doing unnecessary treatments. In this way, we only do preventive treatments if there is a need. The advantage was considerable.

I do not hide from you that other farmers have asked me, when in doubt, whether to go and do treatments in their vineyards or not — not having the tool that I had — and they called me for news. I found myself an extra tool, like having a crystal ball where I knew before the others whether there was an activity to do or not. And the advantages are: We have a significant economic return. Treatments, if necessary and not according to a timetable, clearly lead to savings in the purchase of plant protection products, but also to savings in terms of labour. In the specific case, for example, I do not go to the fields to do treatments but I rely on contractors: Even there, greatly reducing treatments in those months means considerable economic savings.

Then, from an environmental point of view, in my case being an organic farm, less plant protection products we put on the ground and in the atmosphere, and from that point of view it is also an extra step in respect of nature. So of course I recommend it: I absolutely recommend it.

Of course. Safe Vineyard is a decision support system. It doesn't replace your experience, but it can support you in difficult decisions which you have to take in the vineyard.

We have access to one large network of agro-meteo sensors throughout the national territory and we have developed a mathematical method that allows us to be able to understand what are the microclimatic conditions in different points of the territory

We give you access to very punctual microclimate data which are characteristic of your plot. Instead of buying a weather station for each of your plots thanks to Vigneto Sicuro you will have the same information as a weather station without needing to buy it. A nice saving!

We always provide microclimatic data related to your plot so that you can use them in the most constructive way.

Our information is much more timely and can help your agronomist advise you better on when to actually carry out treatments in the vineyard
